Challenge

GEM HEALTH needed a virtual-first platform to deliver telehealth securely and efficiently

GEM needed a robust solution as they began accepting insurance for payers nationwide.

GEM HEALTH’s product GEM SLEEP originally launched with self-pay services. As the company expanded and began accepting insurance, the need for a more robust scheduling platform became clear. “Moving to an insurance-based model meant we had to offer virtual appointments at-scale in a secure, efficient way,” explained Nicole Norder, Senior Director of Product Operations at GEM.

GEM evaluated multiple solutions, including Athena and Canvas Medical, but found them lacking in key areas. “We required a robust scheduling solution—one that’s easy for providers to use (joining visits, setting availability, managing licensure, writing chart notes, etc.), enables patient self-scheduling, and ensures secure telehealth access for both patients and providers,” said Norder. A turning point in their decision-making process was feedback from their own care providers. “Several of our providers had experience with Healthie and strongly recommended it,” Norder shared. This familiarity with the platform, along with its ability to streamline virtual care workflows and being an  easy to use API first solution made Healthie the clear choice.

When selecting a platform to power virtual care operations, GEM prioritized flexibility and seamless integration. “Healthie was the best option for us for two major reasons,” said Norder. “First, Healthie is an API-first solution that allows us to integrate its infrastructure with our proprietary technology, delivering a fully GEM-branded experience. Patients don’t have to log into a separate system—it’s all unified.”

Second, Healthie’s advanced scheduling capabilities eliminated the need for GEM Health to build a solution from scratch. “Our developers had experience creating an online scheduling tool, and we knew how difficult that was,” Norder explained. “We wanted to buy versus build, and Healthie’s scheduling solution is top-notch.”

GEM relies on Healthie’s scheduling, forms, charting, and e-fax capabilities. “Using Healthie’s charting, e-fax, and forms has streamlined processes that we hadn’t outlined in our original scope of use, but Healthie has helped solve a lot more than scheduling for us. They are consistently adding new features and integration options,” explains Norder.
