Flourish Care’s pivot to expand and streamline access to doula services required an ACO-approved platform

Flourish Care needed a comprehensive, HIPAA-compliant platform to support insurance claims and patient engagement.

Flourish Care launched to fund access to services such as doula care, pelvic floor therapy, mental health support, and lactation consultations. However, as state laws began requiring insurance reimbursement for doulas, Flourish focused on operationalizing its doula network by integrating a scalable insurance reimbursement structure. This evolution required Flourish Care to meet the needs of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and state insurance regulations. 

This operational pivot demanded a robust, HIPAA-compliant platform that could handle claims submissions, patient engagement, scheduling, secure messaging, and program delivery. Flourish Care conducted an expansive search and evaluated several solutions, including Athena Health as well as newer platforms. Flourish found that Athena was too hospital-focused, while other platforms lacked the breadth of features necessary to support Flourish’s nascent business model.

Ultimately, Healthie emerged as the ideal solution, empowering Flourish to streamline operations, comply with ACO requirements, and enhance patient care. Founder & CEO, Melissa Bowley noted, “We needed something that could do it all—and Healthie delivered.”

Healthie provided Flourish Care with the essential tools to operationalize their doula services and meet ACO requirements. One standout feature was Healthie’s deep understanding of security documentation, which expedited Flourish’s ability to commence work with ACOs. “Healthie knew exactly what security documentation we needed—it was a huge help,” notes Flourish CEO, Melissa Bowley.

For an early-stage startup, cost-effectiveness and scalability were critical. “Price was a key component because we needed something that could scale with us,” the CEO shared. Healthie’s out-of-the-box functionality allowed Flourish to quickly implement features like scheduling and charting while keeping costs low. While Flourish plans to leverage the platform’s API and white-label capabilities in the future, they appreciated not having to pay for those functionalities upfront. “The ability to grow with us and not break the budget just to get into a pilot was crucial,” added the CEO.

Security was another significant factor in choosing Healthie. Flourish avoided the daunting task of building their own solution, recognizing the complexities of cybersecurity. As Flourish grows, they plan to further customize their user experience, leverage programs, and optimize their use of marketplace integrations.
